An exclusive interview with Deon Wilson

Upcoming 100 Staff: How long have you been in the music industry and has music always been a part of your life?

Deon Wilson: I've been in the music industry for the past 5 years and it definitely has been a journey of success' and failures. Music in general has played a huge part in my life for well over 15 years. I grew up singing in church and exploring writing and from that has translated into an independent career as a music artist.

Upcoming 100 Staff: Was there a specific moment in your life where you thought, “music is what I want to do”?

Deon Wilson: At the age of about 21 I made the decision to really pursue my music career, when I had the opportunity to perform at the Apollo Theater in NYC. Over the course of the next 3 years I had competed in the Apollo every year placing top 3 each year. Due to all the information and contacts we have made I know that it was possible if I truly put the work in.

Upcoming 100 Staff: What inspires you (or your music)?

Deon Wilson: Most of my inspiration comes from straightforward negativity. Whether it may be from negativity within a relationship or others doubt in my capabilities. In addition to that I write from all aspects of my life ranging from pivotal moments, which include experience from past relationships, family and the music grind.

Upcoming 100 Staff: Who’s on your iTunes playlist?’

Deon Wilson: Right now on my play list I have Rick Ross, French Montana, Kevin Gates, Jarule, R Kelly, Gabi Wilson of course Drake just to name a few.

Upcoming 100 Staff: The project you are currently promoting, how did the idea for it come about?

Deon Wilson: My current project out is "The Come Up" and "The Come up" is my story of my elevation, we all have our story this is just my version whether its talking about the usual woman, cars, clothes and money

Upcoming 100 Staff: There are thousands of artists trying to do what you are doing, what do you think gives you an advantage to break into mainstream America?

Deon Wilson: I won't lie the music industry is very finicky and volatile, which could cause set backs for most artists. In my life these have been roadblocks from which I use as a tool in my song writing. As true and emotional Artist, I write from the heart and always have a story to tell. The development of the team around me, and embracing the common goal has genuinely allowed us to elevate. I truly feel staying true to myself and believing in my talent gives me an advantage in breaking into mainstream.

Upcoming 100 Staff: I’ve heard your latest music and it’s amazing! I can definitely tell your sound has evolved over the past few years from previous songs we’ve heard from you online. What are your thoughts on the evolution of an artist and the evolution of music today?

Deon Wilson: In today's music industry if you are not willing to evolve and to continuously re-invent yourself your days are numbered. The difficulty resides in staying up to date in the trend unfortunately in order to keep numbers. To be honest I feel bad where the music is going because a lot of these guys have to become a gimmick in order to sell.

Upcoming 100 Staff: Do you have other passions in life? Do you believe passion is an essential part of success?

Deon Wilson: I have several passions in my life starting with the one that hits closest to home, my daughter. To me she is life. I feel that passion is essential to success because if people truly feel and believe and feel your passion they are more likely to receive what you are putting into the universe

Upcoming 100 Staff: With your current success and working with a renowned PR firm such as Starlight PR, What advice would you give to someone just starting out in his or her career who doesn't even have a studio to record but would love to do what you are doing now?

Deon Wilson: My advice to anyone starting out in their career would first be to surround yourself with people as passionate as you are and not all driven by money. I would also say patience is a virtue and truly necessary to be successful. If you are really working on trying to better yourself trust the process because opportunities will present themselves and if you are ready amazing things will happen, but it all starts with self-belief
