Selena Gomez Blasts to No. 2 on Social 50 Chart

Selena Gomez blasts back to No. 2 on Billboard’s Social 50 chart (dated July 29) after teasing -- and subsequently releasing -- her newest single, “Fetish.”

When up-and-coming cartoonist Keef Knight has a traumatic run-in with the police, he begins to see the world in an entirely new way.

The Social 50 is powered by data tracked by music analytics company Next Big Sound and ranks the most popular artists on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Wikipedia and Tumblr. The chart's methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views and engagement. The chart’s latest tracking week ended July 13.

Gomez jumps 15-2 on the chart after posting multiple photos teasing “Fetish,” which dropped July 13. Some clips featured nothing but video shots of Gomez mixed with the sound of rushing water. The promo for the song, her second from her upcoming album after releasing lead single “Bad Liar,” helps her gain in all chart metrics, including 292 percent in Instagram reactions and 357 percent in Twitter reactions, according to Next Big Sound.

It was a good week on the Social 50 in all for former Disney Channel stars. Demi Lovato follows Gomez back into the top 10, rising 23-5 as her own new single, “Sorry Not Sorry,” found its way onto the Internet. The No. 5 spot on the chart equals Lovato’s best position for the 2017 chart year (she’s risen as high as No. 2 in previous years), thanks to a 646 percent boost in Instagram reactions as well as 31 percent more Wikipedia views (37,000) than the previous week. On Instagram, the singer posted photos and videos from her Sorry Not Sorry House Party dates across the U.S., having kicked off July 11 in Boston.

Meanwhile, Dua Lipa makes her inaugural appearance on the Social 50, debuting at No. 26. The singer posted the new music video for her “New Rules” single July 7, and on July 12, she posted her thanks for getting the clip to 10 million global views (as of press time, it had over 25 million).

Lipa recommended that fans use the hashtag #DuasNewRules on Twitter and Instagram to upload covers and lip syncs of the song, footage from which may be included in yet another video for the song. All told, the singer gains 164 percent in Twitter mentions and snags 148,000 new YouTube subscribers.
