Fan Starts Petition to Rename Santa Monica's Lincoln Park in Honor of Linkin Park's Chester Bennington

A new online petition aims to rename Santa Monica's Lincoln Park -- after which Linkin Park is named -- in honor of the band's frontman Chester Bennington, who committed suicide Thursday (July 20).

When up-and-coming cartoonist Keef Knight has a traumatic run-in with the police, he begins to see the world in an entirely new way.

And it's already racking up more than 4,400 digital signatures, with a goal of 5,000.

The band chose its name in the late '90s as a play on and homage to the park, which was originally named for former president Abraham Lincoln. But in the wake of Bennington's sudden death, Care 2 Petitions user Sarah Rose is asking the Santa Monica City Council to return the favor.

"When I was a teenager, I brought a copy of Linkin Park's Meteora CD insert with me every single day to middle school," writes Rose. "For a large faction of people in my generation, Linkin Park's music helped those who felt alienated find voice and strength."

She also notes that Abraham Lincoln already has numerous monuments, buildings and streets in his namesake. "Let's rename Santa Monica's Lincoln Park to Linkin Park to honor Bennington's contribution to music and the message he spread to all who listened to him: you are not alone," the petition concludes.

The beloved singer was found to have hung himself at his Palos Verdes, California, residence on Thursday. He was 41.

At the time of writing, the Lincoln Park petition has gained 4,417 supporters, making it likely to reach -- and probably surpass -- its goal of 5,000. Find the petition's online page here.
