K-Pop Boy Band WINNER Drops 'Island' & 'Love Me Love Me'

After seeing major success in April when they returned after a long hiatus and a member revamp, Korean boy band WINNER returned Friday (Aug. 4) with two new singles: the seasonally apropos “Love Me Love Me” and “Island.”

When up-and-coming cartoonist Keef Knight has a traumatic run-in with the police, he begins to see the world in an entirely new way.

The breezy dancehall sound of “Island” follows in the addictive footsteps of April's "Really Really," which brought the group to their peak on the World Digital Song Sales chart. Meanwhile, “Love Me Love Me” features a midtempo rhythmic beat and disco vibe, creating an immensely danceable, yet mellow, track.

Members Kang Seung Yoon (Yoon), Song Mino and Lee Seung Hoon (Hoony) worked with Future Bounce and Bekuh Boom to write the two tracks.

The pair of summer dance songs were featured on a single EP titled Our Twenty Four, and accompanied by music videos that WINNER filmed in Hawaii. "Love Me Love Me" features the four enjoying the island state’s offerings while forlornly singing their request to be loved and features graphics and filters to emphasize the song's subtle playfulness. "Island" similarly shows WINNER exploring Hawaii, but moves things away from the resorts to showcase the beauty of nature via vibrant shots of the island’s scenery.

After an extended hiatus of over a year -- an eternity in the K-pop industry -- and losing lead vocalist Nam Tae Hyun earlier this year, WINNER has quickly picked up momentum as one of Korea's most promising boy bands between the four singles they released on Our Twenty Four and April’s Fate Number Four, which featured “Really Really” and the ballad “Fool.” Though lineup changes often spell disaster for K-pop groups, the now-quartet has turned things around to revel and show a distinct musical style between the four songs, offering up a softer style than is typical under their label, YG Entertainment, which also houses BIGBANG and Blackpink.
