Amoeba Music, the iconic vinyl, video and CD store, has been home for music lovers for the past 27 years with locations in Berkeley, San Francisco and Los Angeles. But developer GPI Properties are looking to kick out Amoeba from its Southern California site, which is located in the heart of Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard.
A GPI planning document released Thursday (Aug. 10) shows the developing company's proposal to replace Amoeba with a 28-story mixed-used building made up of a glass facade.
While this news comes as a surprising hit to Amoeba fans, the destruction of Amoeba's Hollywood site has been in the works for almost a year. LAist published a story in September of last year that outlined the GPI's budding plan to raze the Los Angeles landmark. However, Amoeba responded to these speculations in a tweet that implied that they would be staying at their Sunset Boulevard storefront for the entirety of their lease, which was apparently several more years.

Unfortunately, Amoeba Music is getting kicked out a lot quicker than they anticipated.
In a statement posted on their Facebook page on Tuesday, Amoeba writes, “We are in discussions to remain at 6400 Sunset beyond our current lease, but we are also exploring our various options and have already been offered several spaces that could suit us well,” the statement reads. “We will choose what is best at the appropriate time. Amoeba loves LA, we are committed to LA, and we have every intention of remaining in LA. Amoeba is defined by WHO we are not WHERE we are."
