R.E.M. Announce Automatic for the People 25-Year Anniversary Reissue

R.E.M. have announced an extensive new reissue of their landmark album Automatic for the People, celebrating the 25-year anniversary of its release.

When up-and-coming cartoonist Keef Knight has a traumatic run-in with the police, he begins to see the world in an entirely new way.

The newly remastered LP is being re-released November 10 via Craft Recordings, and comes in a variety of versions. The Deluxe and Deluxe Anniversary Editions will feature 20 never-before-heard demos from the recording sessions for the album, including the previously unreleased track “Mike’s Pop Song.” Listen to that one below. Both editions also feature a live recording from 1992, recorded at the 40 Watt Club in the band’s hometown of Athens, Georgia.

The Deluxe Anniversary Edition comes with a 60-page book full of photos, liner notes, and more. It also notably includes a version of the album mixed in Dolby Atmos, the immersive surround sound standard that was first publicly utilized in 2012 on the Pixar film Brave. The new reissue marks the “first major commercial music release” to be mixed in Atmos, according to a press release.

Last year, R.E.M. reissued three of their late 1980s albums on vinyl, as well as their blockbuster Out of Time. Guitarist Peter Buck recently teamed up with Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker in new group Filthy Friends, releasing their debut album.
