Neon Trees were brighter than ever when they stopped by the Billboardstudios to reminisce about their 2012 hit single, “Everybody Talks.” While it took 25 weeks to hit the top 10 on the Hot 100, the quartet peaked at No. 6 on the Hot 100, staying on the songs chart for a total of 39 weeks.
In Billboard’s new series, “Chart Rewind,” we sat down with Neon Trees to take a look back at the record and the making of the vintage-style music video. The band, who all claim to be huge fans of drive-in movie theaters, stated that the theme of the video was an extension of their second studio album, Picture Show.
“This is from our album Picture Show, so the whole theme was escapism, so we went to a grindhouse movie theater,” said Tyler Glenn. Glenn went on to elaborate more on certain imagery and characters in the music video, clarifying that Trixie, the blonde antagonist with red heart-shaped sunglasses, is actually a character who recurs throughout the entire album.
“Trixie is kind of a character I made up throughout the album of Picture Show,” said the lead vocalist and keyboardist. “I was also kind of obsessed with the movie Jennifer’s Body, which I feel is a really underrated movie so there are elements of Jennifer’s Body also in this…when you see Trixie turning into a monster.”
