Remixing is a cake walk when you can juggle a beat and live edit a track on the 1s and 2s. Here, A-Trak gives us insight into his creative process with a step-by-step walkthrough of his remix routine for "Rockstar," Post Malone's Hot 100 No. 1 single.
He starts by casually ripping into the intro and chorus, explaining how he picked out bits and pieces of its "woozy, dreamy" melody for some cool tone play. He drops some cue points, starts working out the pitch, and all of a sudden he's got a work into track collaborator 21 Savage's original tune "Bank Account."
But that's boring, obviously. It's too lineal for A-Trak, so he takes it even deeper with some tricks. One hand rocks the melody, the other hand rocks a rhythm. It's all very impressive behavior. If you're a student of turntablism, you'll definitely learn something in this nearly 12-minute tutorial, but don't expect to be as perfect as A-Trak any time soon.
Study up, ya punks.
