Isaac Hayes & Barry White Fans Treated to Reissues; Prince Fave Rosie Gaines Honored: R&B/Hip-Hop Briefs

Just in time for Black History Month, three of Isaac Hayes’ classic albums have been newly remastered as vinyl editions: Hot Buttered Soul, Shaft and Black Moses. Out Friday (Feb. 23) via Craft Recordings (a division of Concord Music), each reissue comes complete with old-school style tip-on jackets.

When up-and-coming cartoonist Keef Knight has a traumatic run-in with the police, he begins to see the world in an entirely new way.

The Black Mosespackage also features a replica of the original four-foot cross-shaped fold-out image of Hayes as the titular character. The albums, spanning the period from 1969-1971, offer up hits and choice cuts such as “Walk on By,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” the Oscar-winning “Theme from Shaft,” “Do Your Thing,” “Never Can Say Goodbye” and “Ike’s Rap II/Help Me Love.”

Fellow R&B/soul icon Barry White is the focus of an upcoming yearlong 45th anniversary career celebration, encompassing his equally pioneering career. The rollout begins on April 13 when Mercury Records/UMe will release two remastered White hits collections. Love’s Theme: The Best of the 20th Century Records Singles is a single-CD compilation featuring 21 hits including title track “Love’s Theme” and “I’m Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby.” The CD will also be available as a double vinyl album featuring the bonus track “Satin Soul” by the Love Unlimited Orchestra. The three-CD, 46-track The Complete 20th Century Records Singles (1973-1979)comprises the second half of the April 13 kickoff. White gems from that package include “I’ve Got So Much to Give” and “You’re the First, the Last, My Everything,” among others. Preorders of these first two collections are available now (https://lnk.to/LovesThemeCDhttps://lnk.to/20thCenturySingles. On April 20, Mercury/UMe will release The 20th Century Records Singles (1973-1975), a box set of 10 seven-inch vinyl singles. Future releases include complete 20th Century Records LP and CD album box sets, new compilations and album box sets spotlighting White’s female trio Love Unlimited and the Love Unlimited Orchestra.

Singer Rosie Gaines, music fans will recall, joined and toured with Prince’s New Power Generation band in the early ‘90s. In addition to appearing on the Graffiti Bridge album and in the same-titled film, Gaines co-wrote and sang on the tracks “Money Don’t Matter 2 Night” and “Push” on the New Power Generation double-platinum album Diamonds & Pearls. On behalf of the singer, who has suffered some health setbacks, the PRN (Prince Rogers Nelson) Alumni Foundation has launched a “Love for Rosie” fundraising campaign. The foundation has commissioned a T-shirt that features original art created by Paisley Park’s Steve Parke. Fans can purchase the shirt on the PRN Alumni website (prnalumni.org/love4rosie). In turn, sales proceeds will be given to Gaines. Thus far, more than $4000 has been raised. “One of the principles of the PRN Alumni Foundation is to support alumni financially while also acknowledging their contributions to music,” said PRN board president Jacqui Thompson in a press statement. “Our goal is to let Rosie know that her contributions to the music industry are not forgotten and that she is remembered.”
