The former UFC champion spent the weekend in Russia, where he got to watch Les Bleus’ World Cup victory in person. McGregor made sure to document the moment via social media by sharing a photo in which he was seen in the stands with a plate of food: “Enjoying the World Cup final in Russia,” he captioned the post.
Following the historic game, McGregor returned to Instagram with more photos taken during the day; this time sharing pictures of him and Russian president Vladimir Putin posing for the camera.
The 30-year-old athlete claimed in the caption that he was invited to the World Cup as Putin’s “guest.” He then went on to praise the Russian president for his leadership skills. No, really.
“This man is one of the greatest leaders of our time and I was honored to attend such a landmark event alongside him,” McGregor wrote in the caption. “Today was an honor for me Mr. Putin. Thank you and congratulations on an amazing World Cup.”
McGregor concluded the caption by writing “Go Russia!" in the host country's language. Check his post, as well as social media reactions below.
McGregor is scheduled to appear in court Thursday to face two felony counts for his role in an April 5 attack at the Barclays Center. The athlete was seen hurling objects at a bus full of other professional fighters, one of whom was Russia's Khabib Nurmagomedov.
