Issa Rae Joins Paul Feig-Produced Comedy 'American Princess'

Issa Rae will star in the romantic comedy American Princess, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

When up-and-coming cartoonist Keef Knight has a traumatic run-in with the police, he begins to see the world in an entirely new way.

The film tells the story of an American woman, played by Rae, who moves to London and becomes drawn into a world of wealth and high society. She winds up falling in love in a very unexpected way.

Stella Meghie has been tapped to direct Princess. Meghie's 2016 directorial feature film debut Jean of the Joneses earned a Best First Screenplay nomination at the Independent Spirit Awards. Her next project, Everything, Everything, starring Amandla Stenberg and Nick Robinson, amassed just over $60 million at the box office and exposed her work to a wider audience, especially the YA crowd.

Princess will be produced by Paul Feig, along with Jessie Henderson, through his Feigco Entertainment company. Feig has been responsible for ushering female-centric comedies, including Bridesmaids and the new Ghostbusters. After Frances McDormand brought awareness towards the inclusion rider, which requires a certain level of diversity in respect to casting and production staff, in her acceptance speech for Best Actress at this year's Oscars, Feig adopted the policy for his own banner less than two weeks later.

Following a three-season run on the HBO series Insecure where she served as executive producer, writer, and cast member, Issa made her feature film debut in the drama The Hate U Give. Meghie also directed "Fresh-Like," the fourth episode in season three of Insecure.
