Netflix Abruptly Cancels ‘Luke Cage’ After Two Seasons

After streaming the Marvel series for two seasons, Netflix is saying goodbye to Luke Cage .

When up-and-coming cartoonist Keef Knight has a traumatic run-in with the police, he begins to see the world in an entirely new way.

The company announced the cancellation Friday (Oct. 19) in a joint statement with Marvel Television thanking the show’s cast and crew for bringing the super hero drama to life.

“Unfortunately, ‘Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season,” the statement reads. “Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.”

According to Deadline, “creative differences” subsequently drove the decision to cancel the show. The cancellation comes a week after Marvel’s, Iron Fist, got the ax.

Luke Cage, which stars Michael Colter and was created by former music journalist Cheo Hodari Coker, debuted in 2016 as Marvel’s first show to be led by a black superhero and a predominately black cast. Its second season premiered in June.

Marvel’s latest split with Netlflix comes as Disney prepares to launch a subscription streaming service in 2019. Disney acquired Marvel for $4 billion nearly a decade ago. It’s unclear if Luke Cage will be reborn on Disney’s streaming channel, or if the company will scrap the show all together in favor of new Marvel programming.
