WBTV reports, the video began circulating Friday and shows two students standing in front of a Dover High School classroom singing “KKK KKK lets kill all the blacks…burn the cross on their front yard and hope they don’t come back.”
School officials say that the song was created for a U.S. History project.
In a statement to the Washington Post, Superintendent William Harbron says, “They were given an assignment to select some events during Reconstruction and to make a jingle out of it.”
Harbron also said the incident was recorded in part by another student who was in the classroom. Although the district pinned an open letter to the community via Facebook apologizing for the “extreme racial insensitivity,” who is to blame for this? Although it was announced the teacher was placed on leave as a district-wide investigation into the incident continues, what type of punishment should the children receive? Should the principle and Superintendent be held accountable as well?
