Stone informed the congressional committee that he would invoke his Fifth Amendment rights in order to avoid testifying against the President in response to requests for documents and testimony.
As it’s being reported, Stone’s attorney Grant Smith in a later stated, “Mr. Stone’s invocation of his Fifth Amendment privilege must be understood by all to be the assertion of a Constitutional right by an innocent citizen who denounces secrecy. The production of documents that may be responsive to the unreasonably broad scope of the imprecise, fishing expedition, request would unquestionably be a testimonial act protected by the U.S. Constitution.”
Roger Stone has been in the crosshairs of special counsel Robert Mueller’s ongoing investigation of Russian intrusion in the 2016 election. Also, it has been alleged that he had previous knowledge of the WikiLeaks fiasco that sought discredit Hillary Clinton’s campaign by exposing her stolen emails.
Stone has maintained his innocence and received high praise from Trump for loyalty as others around him are copping pleas.
