Derek Fisher Named New Coach of the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks

07/12/2018 byJason Cordner

Derek Fisher will have a second chance at coaching, but this time it will be with the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

His introductory press conference will take place on Friday.

Fisher inherits a team that was 19-15 in 2018, the sixth-best record in the 12-team league. The Sparks defeated the Minnesota Lynx, 75-68, in the first round of the playoffs, then lost to the Washington Mystics, 96-64, in the second round.

This will be Fisher’s second coaching job since his retirement from playing in 2014. He famously took the job as head coach of the New York Knicks immediately after his retirement. It was there in New York where he reunited with his old coach, Phil Jackson.

Luckily for Fisher, there will be no pressure to run the triangle as head coach of the Sparks. That being said, Fisher’s a midseason firing after compiling a 40-96 record in one-plus seasons marred his tenure in New York.

Fisher’s tenure as Knicks head coach included a bizarre domestic spat involving former teammate Matt Barnes and his estranged wife, Gloria Govan.

It’s a bit surprising that the Sparks are bringing in a guy with a checkered past and a brutal win-loss record as a head coach. Perhaps Fisher’s reputation is still intact in L.A. But the move is a head-scratcher nonetheless.
