What begins as a friendly holiday dinner party between neighbors quickly goes south when SNL's Leslie Jones and host Matt Damon get into a heated debate over Weezer's past and present music. The argument begins when Weezer's recent cover of Toto's "Africa" begins playing in the background during the engagement.
“I think they’re doing some cool things right now,” Damon’s character says of Weezer, adding that the group has announced the release date for their upcoming Black Album.
Jones, who plays the role of a new addition to the neighborhood, quickly chimes in noting that Weezer hasn't released good music in over 20 years. “I’m just a little confused because real Weezer fans know they haven’t had a good album since Pinkerton in ’96," she states.
Jones then turns up the heat, adding that “Weezer put out two perfect albums, Blue and Pinkerton, and the rest is pretty corny." Damon responds that he's "ride of die" with the band and hilariously argues that "Pork and Beans" is better than "Buddy Holly."
Things only get more ridiculous from there. Jones is quick to point out that Weezer went downhill after the exit of bassist Matt Sharp, while Damon argues that Weezer didn't really begin until Scott Shriner joined in 2001.
The skit concludes with another dinner guest announcing that she's a fan of Yellowcard, which prompts Damon to abruptly exit the party while singing Weezer's "Beverly Hills" as he storms out the door.
Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo was ecstatic to see his band front and center on SNL. "THEY HAD A WHOLE ASS SKIT ABOUT WEEZER AND ME ON SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE AND IM ACTUALLY CRYING AAAGGGGHHHHHHH," he tweeted Sunday morning.
The the group's drummer Patrick Wilson also enjoyed the skit, tweeting, "Go Matt Damon!"
