The lyrics in question are racist towards the Asian community.
"Smokin' on dope/ They call me Yao Ming 'cause my eyes real low (ching chong)," he says in the video, posted to his IG on Monday (Dec. 17). While saying the line, the "Gucci Gang" rapper slants his eyelids.
Naturally and justifiably, Internet users called out the MC for the lyrics and his gesture, one of them being Crazy Rich Asians star and occasional rapper Awkwafina.
"Always nice to hear a new song with a Ching Chong adlib. Guess it’s better than 'eyes chink' like some other verses I’ve heard," the Queens native wrote on Twitter. "But can we at least think of some more creative racist epithets? @lilpump."
Pump hasn't responded to the backlash, but he's hardly the first musician to use controversial lyrics deemed racist towards the Asian community. Wiz Khalifa commented on flack he received for lyrics he spit on Rolling Papers 2 ("Smoke got my eyes lookin' Korean").
"I have Korean friends who are not offended," he state.d "So I don’t know those people who are saying that. My art is up for interpretation."
