Rick Rubin Documentary to Air on Showtime Later This Year

A documentary series about legendary producer Rick Rubin is coming to Showtime later this year.

When up-and-coming cartoonist Keef Knight has a traumatic run-in with the police, he begins to see the world in an entirely new way.

The doc will be directed by Morgan Neville, who has quite the award-winning resume. He won an Oscar in 2014 for Best Documentary Feature for 20 Feet from Stardom and an Emmy in 2017 for Outstanding Historical Documentary for Best of Enemies. Neville was also the director of the 2018 documentary film Won't You Be My Neighbor? about the life of Fred Rogers, the man who created the long-running children's television show Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.

With the working title Shangri-La, the documentary series will be "an all-access pass into Rubin’s creative process, giving viewers a taste of what it’s like to be produced by the music world’s most singular voice," according to Newsday. Rubin co-founded Def Jam Records in 1984 out of his dorm room while he was still a student at New York University. He's a two-time Grammy Awards winner for Producer of the Year and helped contribute to the Album of the Year victories for the Dixie Chicks (Taking the Long Way) and Adele (21) in 2007 and 2012, respectively.

Shangri-La will make its debut as a "work-in-progress" at SXSW in Austin, Texas in March.
