Hear Spain's Eurovision Song 'La Venda'

“La Venda” will represent Spain at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest.

When up-and-coming cartoonist Keef Knight has a traumatic run-in with the police, he begins to see the world in an entirely new way.

The song was voted the country’s winner by audience vote Sunday night (Jan. 20) from among a field of entries performed on Spanish national television during a special edition of the music reality show Operación Triunfo, designed to determine Spain’s Eurovision entry.

Performed by 23-year-old Operación Triunfo contestant Miki Núñez, “La Venda” is a rousing party anthem, the kind of popular Spanish song that typically animates both soccer stadiums and neighborhood festivals. The song was written by Barcelona band La Pegatina, and the Latin alternative rumba-and-ska vibe will ring familiar with fans of artists like Los Fabulosos Cadillacs or Manu Chao.

“La Venda” won over the favorite in the Spanish competition “Muérdame,” sung by María Villar to a reggaetón rhythm.

Spain’s 2018 Eurovision entry, the romantic duet “Tu Canción,” came in in 23rd out of 26 contestants in the popular vote. With “La Venda,” Spain is betting on a song that will please the crowd rather than one that will depend on the artist’s vocal talent to wow the judges and audience voters.

Eurovision’s 2019 edition is set to be broadcast globally from Tel Aviv May 14-18.
