Feds Reportedly Looking Into the Threatening Letter That Was Sent to Jussie Smollett (UPDATE)

UPDATED 6:40 p.m. ET: The FBI and US Postal Inspection Services are looking to see if the threatening letter that was sent to Jussie Smollett was sent by the actor himself, Page Six reports.

When up-and-coming cartoonist Keef Knight has a traumatic run-in with the police, he begins to see the world in an entirely new way.

"You will die black f–k," the letter reportedly read.

Additionally, Chicago Police are now saying that a tip they received about Smollett and his alleged attackers being seen together in an elevator are "unfounded."

In other news related to the case, Smollett has reportedly been in contact with lawyer Mark Geragos, according to a source that spoke with Deadline.

According to the Associated Press, Chicago police say they received a tip that Jussie Smollett and his two alleged attackers were seen together in an elevator the night of the incident.

On Tuesday, Feb. 19, CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi released a statement that a person in the building where Smollett lives saw the actor and his two suspected accomplices inside an elevator the same night the Empire star claimed he was the victim of a homophobic and racist attack.

Although the police have not confirmed the witness' account, the tip adds to the rumblings that Smollett staged the incident. Prior to this report, Empire crew members Ola and Abel Osundairo claimed they were recruited by Smollett to help orchestrate the attack. This combined with the city holding a Grand Jury hearing on whether Smollett should be charged with a felony for filing a false police report has cast doubt on the actor's story.

As a result, many are starting to distance themselves from the entertainer. Artists like rapper Cardi B have voiced their concerns about the ongoing investigation, while Empire is rumored to have downsized Smollett's storyline in the upcoming season.

Despite this, Jussie Smollett and his lawyers have maintained his innocence, stating anyone who claims Smollett falsified the attack is "lying."
