Kodak Black’s Rape Trial Reportedly Delayed at His Request

According to legal documents obtained by Bossip, a South Carolina judge has reportedly granted the rapper's request to delay his rape trial. Kodak was initially scheduled to appear in court this month to face sexual assault allegations involving a teenage girl. The outlet reports the state solicitor didn't object to the request, so the judge gave it the OK. It's unclear when Kodak's trial will begin.

Earlier this month, the Charlotte Observer reported the 21-year-old's trial was continued to a later date. Ed Clements, solicitor for the 12th Judicial Circuit, said Kodak was expected back in court sometime this summer or fall. "We are slowly but steadily moving toward a disposition," Clements said at the time. "I want to do justice for the victim, whatever that takes."

Kodak faces up to 30 years in prison on first-degree criminal sexual conduct. The charges stem from a 2016 incident at a South Carolina hotel, where Kodak allegedly pinned the victim down and raped her. State officials have confirmed the high schooler was not a minor at the time of the alleged assault.

The rapper was arrested on the rape charges in late 2016, but was released shortly after on a $100,000 bond. He also agreed to submit a DNA swab, which—as Bossip theorizes—could be the basis for the trial delay request.

Lawyers for the rapper recently argued that they need the delay in legal proceedings in order to prep for trial and to handle issues surrounding the evidence in the case. That may mean he’ll plan to contest a judge’s order for his DNA after investigators said they found what they believe is his genes on his alleged victim.

Kodak was arrested last week at the Canada-U.S. border near Niagara Falls. The rapper and his associates were taken into custody after border agents discovered weed and a firearm inside their vehicle. Kodak was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and unlawful possession of marijuana. He was released after posting a $20,000 bail.
