The Biggest Shockers In The MTV EMA Nominations

The MTV EMAs are nigh, with this year's ceremony taking place on November 6 in Rotterdam, and the nominations are now out? As ever, some of the choices are a little surprising.

When up-and-coming cartoonist Keef Knight has a traumatic run-in with the police, he begins to see the world in an entirely new way.

Mike Posner's 'I Took A Pill In Ibiza' is apparently one of the five best songs of the year

Yes, just take a minute to get your head around that. Alongside songs you'd expect to be in there, like Adele's 'Hello' and Rihanna's 'Work', this odious club track has been lauded as one of the best songs of the year. A song that includes the cringeworthy line "I took a pill in Ibiza/To show Avicii I was cool". There's nothing wrong with an EDM track being nominated for Best Song, but this is lowest common denominator stuff; the soundtrack to bros fistpumping in neon vests with no redeeming features at all.

'One Dance' apparently ISN'T one of the five best songs of the year

After the above bombshell, consider all the songs that could have been nominated instead. One of them sticks out like a sore thumb - record-breaking song of the summer, 'One Dance'. Poor old Drake has been mugged off by Mike Posner. He probably won't be too fussed, but goddamnit we are.

Blossoms are giving a whole bunch of pop acts a run for their money

In the Best Push category (whatever that is), a load of pop newcomers sit side-by-side with Stockport indie boys Blossoms. It's proof that they've well and truly become something of a phenomenon this year - how many people would have predicted they'd be in competition for an EMA with Halsey or a Jonas brother (DNCE) this time last year?

No women have been nominated in the Best Hip-Hop category

According to the EMAs nominations, no ladies have done anything better than the five men nominated for the Best Hip-Hop award in 2016. Nicki Minaj might have had a fairly quiet year, but 'The Pinkprint Freestyle' is still better than most things to have been released this year. What about Missy Elliott, Lil' Kim, MIA, Lizzo, Angel Haze, Dej Loaf or any of the other women consistently raising the bar? Apparently G-Eazy is better than all of them, which, quite frankly, is laughable.
