David Bowie 70th birthday concerts to be staged in London, New York and Sydney

Iconic singer passed away in January

When up-and-coming cartoonist Keef Knight has a traumatic run-in with the police, he begins to see the world in an entirely new way.

A series of concerts marking David Bowie‘s 70th birthday have been announced.

The gigs, which will kick off at London’s O2 Brixton Academy on January 8, the day of the late singer’s birthday, will also take place in New York, Los Angeles, Sydney and Tokyo throughout the month.

Bowie died, aged 69, on January 10 this year two days after the release of his album ‘Blackstar’, a record which many fans believed was his final farewell.

According to an event description on New York venue Terminal 5’s website, each event will “aid local charities,” and features “a core two dozen musicians travelling plus many local, regional, and national musicians.”

It will include Bowie collaborators Mike Garson, Adrian Belew, Earl Slick, Fishbone’s Angelo Moore, Gaby Moreno, Bernard Fowler, Joe Sumner, and more.

The London show at O2 Academy in Brixton will also feature actor Gary Oldman.

The full list of tour dates are as follows:

London O2 Brixton Academy (January 8)
New York Terminal 5 (10)
Los Angeles The Wiltern (25)
Sydney Opera House (29)
Tokyo Dome City Hall (February 2)

Bowie’s saxophonist Donny McCaslin recently said the late singer was working on another album.

“It certainly didn’t seem that it (‘Blackstar’) would be his last record,” McCaslin said. “He was going to start writing new music – or maybe he had started; it wasn’t quite clear – but he was in the process of planning a new recording with us. I don’t think ‘Blackstar’ was this goodbye thing.”

He also claims that Bowie was considering appearing on stage for the first time in a decade.

“Clearly there wasn’t going to be a ‘Blackstar’ tour but he was going to sit in with us at (New York jazz club) the Village Vanguard. It would just have been him turning up unannounced after rehearsing during the day,” McCaslin added.

Earlier this year, McCaslin and his band announced their own album inspired by and dedicated to their former collaborator.
