K7 Speaks on Freestyle Music, Hip-Hop Culture, & Who’s Allowed to Say the ‘N’ Word

He attributes some of this to the changes that came with radio in marginalizing freestyle, dance and hip-hop music.

When up-and-coming cartoonist Keef Knight has a traumatic run-in with the police, he begins to see the world in an entirely new way.

K7, the frontman of the 80’s Latin freestyle group TKA, stopped by Sway in the Morning to talk about the roots of hip-hop culture as well as breaks down why the music group broke apart.

He attributes some of this to the changes that came with radio in marginalizing freestyle, dance and hip-hop music. “Some of the loops that were used as the foundation to what hip-hop is, comes from Latin music or dance music, if you will, so it’s a shame that we drifted apart, but we are one in the same.”

K7 also introduced us to his 22-year-old son, who goes by the name J6 and we asked the aspiring rapper what he’s learned the most about his father’s industry experience. “One thing my dad’s always told me, never to stick to one side of music. I always listen to everything, always try and do my research, always try and find new influences.” We had J6 enter the valley of the hyenas, check his freestyle below.

K7 will headline on May 13 at Wellmont Theater in Montclair, New Jersey for the Third Annual Jersey Freestyle Jam.
