The Chills

Kaleidoscope World

When this compilation of Chills singles, compilation appearances (the first side consists of their four tracks on the legendary Dunedin Double compilation that helped launch the '80s scene in New Zealand), and other stray tracks first appeared in 1986 on the venerable Flying Nun label on a 12-inch, it was only eight tracks long. It was reissued several times in the 1980s, first in 1987 (adding the "I'll Only See You Alone Again" single to the pre-existing track order) and the first CD issue in 1989, which upped the ante to a whopping 17 tracks, including "Pink Frost" (inarguably their most iconic song and one of their very best as well) alongside other now classics like "Doledrums" and "I Love My Leather Jacket."

Having previously been out of print for decades, Kaleidoscope World has been lovingly reissued by their current label Fire and now includes no less than 24 tracks. The previously unreleased tracks include an alternate early version of "Oncoming Day," a great live version of "Dan Destiny and the Silver Dawn," and "I'll Only See You Alone Again" (which had been omitted from the 1989 reissue).
Therefore, even if one has one or more of the previous versions, this is well worth the upgrade to hear some of the very best material from arguably New Zealand's greatest band ever. (www.softbomb.com)
