Sphinx channels good fortune, energy with new music

ATLANTA, GA – History has always been a favorite subject of the young hip-hop artist from Atlanta, Georgia known as Sphinx.

When he went to college, History was always the thing he was most interested. While he was learning about things like Egyptian history, he was also learning how to advance a music career. He was developing his style as a rapper and creating a unique sound that would make him stand out from the crowd.

It was during that time that he realized how powerful the image of the Sphinx is. As a symbol of good fortune and good energy for the Egyptian empire, the Sphinx was revered during its day. It didn’t take long before that imagery represented him as an artist in deep and profound ways.

“The Sphinx is like a hero on the horizon,” he said. “It’s like the sun. For the Egyptians it was big about God and heritage and stood for good fortune and good energy and things like that. It’s basically a lion with a man’s head on it, and I have always had long dreadlocks and people have told me I look like a lion because of my long hair. When you put all those things together, I realize that’s what I want to stand for. The Sphinx perfectly represents me.”

Today Sphinx is reinforcing that reputation by putting out solid music that’s beginning to make wave among increasing numbers of fans throughout the South and East Coast. He released a 12-song mixtape called “Supreme Being” last fall that has been getting some positive feedback, and his most recent single “F*#k the System” is not only making a statement to listeners all over the world, but giving fans a new anthem behind which to rally during this difficult time of racial tension throughout the U.S.

“It’s a song that has kind of like a party vibe to it, but I basically made it for the people who embrace the struggle,” Sphinx said. “The concept for the music video is me in the studio doing a performance with a red and blue light flashing the entire time, representing the police – AKA, ‘The System.’ I’m basically just telling my story with this song. I’ve seen a lot of families get locked up. I have a cousin who has been locked up for more than 25 years, and we’ve recently gotten close and I feel like he was locked up for something he didn’t do. But even if he is innocent, it can’t be proven because of the way the system is set up. My father also spent time in jail, and everybody thought I would follow along in his footsteps. But I look at the mistakes and the choices they made and I don’t look down on them, but I make sure I follow good choices and do it my own way. Now I’m making music and trying to inspire others through that music.”

Sphinx said he hopes people hear his music and realize that anything is possible. He said his message often encourages people not to judge others, but instead to focus and work hard on realizing their own dreams.

“I want people to see that anything is possible if they stay at it and keep God first and stick with what’s in their gut,” he said. “I put God before everything, including my music. Without Him I wouldn’t even have my gifts.”
