Exclusive Interview With Brook Brovaz

An exclusive interview with Brook Brovaz.

Upcoming100: How long have you been in the music industry and has music always been a part of your life?

Brook Brovaz: We've been in the industry since 2011 but we have been doing music forever, over 20 years. Music definitely is life for us.

Upcoming100: Was there a specific moment in your life when you thought, “Music is what I want to do”?

Brook Brovaz: Shak-Trauma Response: I knew since 1989 watching video music box that music is a profession that I would pursue. Besides, both me & Silver grew up in diverse Caribbean music households so music was just a part of our everyday living and we knew this was going to be our lives early in our childhood.

Upcoming100: What inspires you (or your music)?

Brook Brovaz: Everything Inspires Us...You know World Events, Science, Sports, Fashion, Spirituality, Education etc. As for our music, everybody inspires us to do what we do. Since we are music producers, first, we listen to everything so we can develop the skills to produce in that Genre.

Upcoming100: Who’s on your iTunes playlist?

Brook Brovaz: Rexx Life Raj, Royce The 59, Joyner Lucas, Panic At The Disco, J Balvin, Wizkid, Drake, Wu-tang Clan, Smif N Wessun, Griselda Boys, Demi Lavato, Ocean Park Stand Off, Stylo G, Jadakiss, Skepta, The Dramatics, Najee, Dolly Parton, Paul Hardcastle, Jay Z, Nas, Biggie, Big L, Most Of Teddy Riley New Jack Swing Hits, Alot Of Dancehall & Soca.

Upcoming100: How did the idea for your single “Squad Goals” come about?
https://youtu.be/WkGARMOOTQY

Brook Brovaz: Well, we wanted to create an anthem that celebrates winning teams. A song that makes you appreciate the people around you, friends, family your team, squad etc knowing that everybody is putting in the blood, years and sweat equity to achieve one goal and complete the mission. It doesn't have to be entertainment-based whether a group of girls were able to save up for a dream vacation and made it happen, or a group of gentlemen graduating college together just doing it as a team is the whole idea where Squad Goals centers.

Upcoming100: There are thousands of artists trying to do what you are doing, what do you think gives you an advantage to break into mainstream America?

Brook Brovaz: What gives us the advantage, honestly, is that we are producers first and approach everything with that mindset. Since we can produce every single genre known, there are no limitations on where we can take music. For example, we've composed over 500 music scores for TV, Film, Ads, Video Games & Mnemonics… and continuing. Meanwhile, still producing singles for the hottest up-and-coming to muilti-platinum Grammy award winning artist projects, while releasing our own material. Again, we could just produce a charting Alternative Rock song, Hip Hop, Latin, Afro Beat and be due for a Prime Time Emmy award for composing a music score for a movie soundtrack. You see, so these are our advantages -- we are not niche music producers. We have no ceiling.

Upcoming100: What are your thoughts on the evolution of artists and music today?

Brook Brovaz: You know, shout out to everybody in the game doing their thing, we love where music has gone from where it came. There are a lot of us in the music industry that are able to take care of our families and create legacies off of the art. And today, you can do it independently with no major label and keep a bulk of the proceeds off your intellectual property. I know some would beg to differ that music has lost its essence and that may be true. However, every coast was able to get a run and new genres are being created by a way of musical fusing art. We love it and the exciting thing is we can keep up with whatever is going on currently or if we have to travel back in time -- we can deliver. Evolution is inevitable so you just got to get with the program and add your own spice.

Upcoming100: Do you have other passions in life? Do you believe passion is an essential part of success?

Brook Brovaz: Yes, we do have other passions in life. It's just that music happens to always stay at the forefront. You have to expand your portfolio, I mean, you can't do anything forever. There will be a time when we have to just sit down and enjoy the fruits of our labor, put others on, pass the torch so our legacy can continue. Building other businesses and making other investments is imperative. Passion is most definitely a huge part of success because when you’re passionate, it doesn’t matter how many doors close or NOs you get. Passion keeps the fire burning. It keeps you focused and eventually will lead to one’s success. Passion is the only driving force.

Upcoming100: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in his or her career who doesn't even have a studio to record but would love to do what you are doing now?

Brook Brovaz: The first thing per the last question is make sure music is something you truly want to do and are passionate about. This industry is not all cracked up to what it seems. It can make or break you so making sure this career path of choice is not just some job because you see the perks, but a true passion inside you. The next thing is investing into yourself. It's 2020 and some knowledge is at your disposal. Just Google a couple of studios near you with great reviews and book a session. Start and or invest into some music equipment yourself from researching forums or watching YouTube tutorials. After you found your groove, love what you do. If you love what you do, it will never feel like work. No matter how hard it gets or how jagged the road may fee, love it. Have fun. Don't take it too seriously. Make mistakes, learn and stay consistent. All it takes is one record, one hit to change your entire life.
