Exclusive Interview with Devorah

Upcoming 100: How did you discover your passion for music, and at what age did you begin pursuing it seriously?

Devorah: When I was 3 years old I climbed up on the table at pre school and did a show for everyone. I’ve been taking it seriously since before I remember.

Upcoming 100: Can you describe your journey from your first musical endeavors to where you are now?
Devorah:
I started as Danielle Alexa, and did an album and music videos for that project, but I didn’t feel like it was authentic to me. I then changed my name to Devorah which is my Hebrew name, and started making music that really touched my soul and delivers messages to others about the beauty of life.

Upcoming 100: How do you balance your creative vision with the expectations of your record label or management?
Devorah: My label, One Shoe Records, is very supportive of my vision.

Upcoming 100: Can you share some insights into your songwriting process, and how you develop lyrics and melodies?
Devorah: I usually start with a melody that comes to me, and then lyrics instantly come to me based on the vibration of what I’m singing. Sometimes I start with a track and it’s the same thing, I write based on the mood of what I’m hearing.

Upcoming 100: How do you handle stage fright or nerves before a performance?
Devorah: I shake it out and remember that my voice will carry me.

Upcoming 100: What do you think sets you apart from other artists in the industry?
Devorah: I think my genre bending between EDM and R&B/pop is unique and not many artists are doing it.

Upcoming 100: How do you stay current with music trends and evolving technologies in the industry?
Devorah: I like to listen to the latest songs within my genres and draw inspiration from them. As far as evolving technologies, I make sure I use a good distributor and stay consistent with streaming.

Upcoming 100: Can you discuss your experience with live performances, and any challenges you've faced while on stage?
Devorah: I have a great time on stage. I hire dancers and just go up there and sing my heart out. Sometimes I open for people where the crowd is there for another genre and that is sometimes challenging because I get into my head about whether I’m delivering a performance that is copacetic with the main act.

Upcoming 100: How do you handle criticism or negative reviews of your music?
Devorah: Not everyone is going to like your art. It’s truly subjective and you have to ignore the haters.

Upcoming 100: What are some of the most valuable lessons you've learned during your music career so far?
Devorah: Never give up, No’s will always lead to a yes, and stay authentic.

Upcoming 100: How do you maintain a work-life balance while juggling the demands of your music career?
Devorah: Music is my career. I am in it full time.

Upcoming 100: What are your long-term goals for your music career, and how do you plan to achieve them?
Devorah: My long term goals are to spread the message of resilience and love to as many people as possible, and I plan to achieve that by continuing to create music with a message.
