Odelet takes her listeners on a musical ride in a magic coach with jazzy, poppy “Cinderella”

When Odelet sings, it is as if she becomes part of the music.

When Odelet sings, it is as if she becomes part of the music.

In “Cinderella,” dropping April 11, her voice and delivery turn syllables into the notes of a separate instrument, giving the lyrics their own melody intertwined with that of the music.

The song is a mix of jazz and pop, dance and R&B, but Odelet’s voice and the way she delivers the lyrics makes it something different altogether.

“Cinderella” is the second single to be released in advance of both an EP, Odelets Hufflepuff (April 20) and an album, Pisces Pie (May 11).

“I’ve always been drawn to music because of what’s going on melodically,” she said. “That’s the foundation.”

In “Cinderella,” Odelet seems at first as if she is not singing words at all but playing her vocals. Then the lyrics, the syllables and words, begin materializing like magic out of her rich, beautiful voice.

Fall again and fall again

Before the underneath me rolls

Rolla rolla roll again

Before the stroke of midnight tolls

I just know I’m gonna, gonna

Fall, fall, fall

In love again and again

The production is an homage to “old-school hip-hop.” Odelet’s jazz style vocals tell a modern Cinderella story.  The vibe is “a minimalist hip-hop song, almost a club song.”

She loves writing lyrics but, she says, she always thought of her voice as an instrument.

As she talks, the phrases that come up are “drinking in the music,” “riding on the music,” “like a dream,” “a comfortable, harmonious feeling.”

“It’s very funny to describe things that feel ineffable,” she concludes.

In her relationship to her music, her voice, the lyrics and her presentation of them, she said, “There’s a fairy tale kind of feeling.”

Odelet, a “savant singer,” a musician, composer and producer, was born in Detroit, grew up with soul and R&B and in her bio describes her genre as “a bit hard to say, R&B for sure, or neo soul, or pop, definitely some heavy hip-hop influence and a bit of jazz.”

She performs almost all her own instrumentation and has been putting out music since 2021, when she released a 19-track album called Experiment.

In 2022, she co-founded a production company, Everlasting Tape, and put out “her first full band production,” The Angels Album, which features Odelet singing primarily soul and R&B.

“Cinderella” is for her “a love song to myself,” but one that she says anyone can turn into a love song about themselves.

In fact, she says, “A characteristic of the 11 songs on Pisces Pie that very much applies to ‘Cinderella’ is that they sort of double as love songs for another person loving someone else, but they’re also sort of empowerment songs about love of self.”

“Cinderella” is one of three or four poppy songs on the albums, but “if you just heard ‘Cinderella,’ you really would have no idea what you’re in for.”

The album will present a mix of jazz, R&B, soul, hip-hop and more.

“It is sort of about me because I love what has taken place with the sound that I make. It often feels very dreamy to me. What happens vocally from me, as Odelet, is a very Cinderella kind of feeling.”

She is, essentially, describing the creation, or evolution, of an artist.

“I’m just gonna let my music come out however it comes out and play with it that way, because it’s more about the experience of it, the thrill of creating it.”
