Known for his elaborate robes and ethereal vocals, this intriguing international artist brings a variety of sounds and styles to the table. His latest hit, “Higher,” is a dark-pop EDM vibe that explores the demons of addiction and how those demons often make damaging bedfellows with depression and despair.
The song is a bit of a departure from this artist’s previous work, as he’s typically known for more of an upbeat vibe that promotes self-love. But with “Higher” King Anis talks about drinking to excess in order to take a deep dive into darkness because that’s better than facing the emotions of loss and heartbreak.
“Basically it’s a song that says I want to get higher so that I can be happier,” King Anis said. “I’m human and can be sad and angry, and I fight with those things like others do. Even though I’m promoting self-love through my music, there are times when we all feel like the darkness would be better than facing all of those strong emotions. For me, this song was inspired by my experience with an ex, and I think it’s a song that people all over the world will be able to relate to because it’s something we all experience at one time or another.”
Born into an Indonesian family that had strong roots in business and entrepreneurship, young Anis found himself often lost in the midst of a culture that didn’t quite seem to fit his more creative and unique personality. Music was something that always attracted him, and he often turned to music as an outlet for his confusing emotions. He soon began to write his own songs – exuding pleas to audiences to take positive steps toward better self-esteem and embracing individuality. He soon discovered that his unique vocals – which sit in the higher tenor register, more often than not – set him apart from other male vocalists in the world, and as such were extremely attractive to an ever-widening fanbase.
As he has released more singles over the course of his career, he has steadily grown his fanbase to become truly international in nature. “Higher” will be his third song, and new audiences will be able to see immediately how adept he is as a storyteller and performer.
“I have nothing to hide, and that’s what I want people to know when it comes to my music,” he said. “I want to use music to help people be more unapologetic about what they want to do with their lives. Do what you want, as long as you’re happy.”
