This is an exciting time for Wowashwow. Just last week, she released her debut album, “I’M A HASHOLE.” How does she feel during such a monumental moment in her blossoming musical career? “I’m feeling absolutely amazed. A little overwhelmed—in a good way! It hasn’t been a week since the album is out on Spotify and it’s already surpassed our expectations.”
Wowashwow has hit the ground running with her album, which only took two months to complete, but her success doesn’t come out of thin air. In fact, Wowashwow has been surrounded by music her entire life. From her first performance at a county fair as a child—emanating the style of Diana Ross and other famous performers she admired—to her punk rock band days in high school and college, the artist has dabbled with a variety of musical genres throughout her life. There was a moment in time—in the throes of an unhealthy relationship—when she put music on the back burner and soon after realized that diverging from her calling was a large source of her unhappiness. “Fast forward to when I found myself again. I told myself—'You’re an artist. You’re creative. Music is what you do. That’s probably why you’re not happy—you’re not doing what makes you smile.’”
These days, Wowashwow is more than smiling—she’s ecstatic about how far she’s come and isn’t slowing down any time soon. Consistency is key to her success, and she can’t stress enough how important it has been to her career to be surrounded by people who have led by example through consistency and focus in their professions. “I’ve honestly fallen in love with the mundane things—emails and paperwork—the details that help me get to the next level of where I want to go.” For Wowashwow, loving the process and self-discipline are key to success.
Determination and a do-it-yourself attitude are also driving factors behind the artist’s flourishing career. Her first single dropped this past March, garnering 15,000 streams with no promotional efforts apart from social media. Featuring a self-produced music video, it led the way to her next single, which also had an accompanying video and featured her trusted creative team once again. “I’m going for the Adam Sandler creative method, using the same team. They pretty much are family. Each one is so talented and works in the industry and come together to invest time in me.” It’s this level of gratitude and awareness that keeps collaborators and fans loyal to Wowashwow.
As for her current album, Wowashwow credits its success to her emotional state and trusted community. “I’m in this space where I’m happy and feeling good. I want something that reflects that.” In August, she got together with a seven-piece band and created the entire album from scratch, on the spot. “Everything you hear—nothing is sampled. I want to bring the live show back. What you hear on the album will be in the show if not better. What we create in the studio is what I want to be able to replicate live. Big band show energy. But hip hop and R&B music. Motown vibes to hip hop.”
Wowashwow’s dedication to bringing back the art of performance and stage presence does not go unnoticed. Backed by a live band and dancers, her performances give off energy lacking from studio albums these days. She’s looking forward to going on tour in the next year and bringing her unstoppable force to a city near you.
