Avalanche The Architect Takes On The Industry, Injustice, And His Own Musical Evolution

Avalanche The Architect, a former MMA fighter, is poised for a fight.

Avalanche The Architect, a former MMA fighter, is poised for a fight. In the battle for success, he’s taking on the industry, injustice, and his own evolution through sound.

Don’t expect Avalanche to sell out—he’s committed to his roots as a battle-rap artist, rapping about life and the streets, and mixing 90s rap style with modern lyrics. His latest single, “My Waistband Looks Like A Gun Shop,” combines word play with old-school beats for a sound all his own.

A typical day for Avalanche The Architect involves going into the studio to record, guest starring on podcasts, or scripting videos for his YouTube channel. While he’s not a fan of the “what can you do for me” attitude that is often a part of the industry, he is willing to do what it takes to get ahead of the game. “I listen to the artists I like and my own music to see what they do that I’m not doing. Am I enunciating and breathing properly? If I’m rushing words, I’ll focus on that next time.”

Brainstorming with other artists and creating compilations is all part of the journey for the artist. Avalanche is particularly fond of videos from the 90s and their signature crew shots. “I don’t have too many songs with a story line, so I enjoy random shots that accentuate and highlight lyrics.” This style carries throughout his videos for an emotional delivery of lyrics from song to song.

Avalanche The Artist recognizes how far he has come as an artist. He is proud of the evolution of his music—“before, it was a lot more raw and not refined, but now it’s more structured. My overall perspective has changed dramatically.” The artist also highlights how his music changed drastically from 2013 onwards—“it got more aggressive” following being targeted and racially discriminated against by the legal system over his rap lyrics.

In his musical career and outside of it, Avalanche The Architect is passionate about social justice, particularly Black Lives Matter. A personal encounter with the law over his lyrics during a rap battle resulted in a botched appeal case and injustices that the artist feels are discriminatory and should be brought to light. “For my video, I showed clips of people fighting back against police oppression and discrimination. I want to show the comparisons between what happens to white and black people when committing a crime. I want to highlight prejudice in the Canadian judicial system.”

The ongoing closures throughout the pandemic forced Avalanche The Architect to focus on local ventures, writing, and videos; however, he’s hoping 2022 will allow for new experiences.

On the horizon, the artist is looking forward to more venues opening up so he can focus on touring and performing at live shows and festivals. “Performing is the best part of the whole process of music. It’s better than recording and shooting videos. I get to see fans in person and get a genuine reaction. Comments on a YouTube video are different than seeing people jumping and reciting my lyrics back at me.”
