Kira Rizavi brings her powerful voice out to play in new release “Chasing My Chances”

This student at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music has been known to rush a stage at parties or dinners.

“I like performing wherever I can,” she said. “Really, if there’s a microphone and a band, I’ll ask them to play a song and if I can sing the chorus. I feel myself come alive in performance,” and the truth of that is obvious to anyone who listens to her music.

In addition to picking up random mics, she has performed formally at venues in Abu Dhabi, Costa Rica, the Bahamas, and her hometown, New York City.

Kira’s newest track, “Chasing My Chances,” will drop this Friday, June 9. She describes it as a summertime song.

“I wrote it to be a hot summer vibe, at the beach with my friends, having fun, laughing and meeting new people.”

’Cuz I don’t want to change who I am

And I don’t want to leave where I am

And I know who I am and I can’t stop

That’s when stars align.

Kira has released music in the past few years, and more is on the way. Her chosen genres are pop/electro-pop/dance pop, but the music she is currently focusing on will “have a little spin on it, for sure. It’s not something I’ve done before, but that’s what makes it exciting.”

Pressed to describe this “new spin” just a little, Kira said, “It’s a vocal showcase. I’m really inspired by Aretha and Whitney. I’m obviously not going to compare myself to them, but these songs are very vocally acrobatic and soulful. I’ve also really been diving into my lower register, because I recently realized I have one, and it’s been exciting to control it.”

As new music is released, she hopes to play at venues around New York City “to get my music out there.”

Kira has dreamed of a performing career since she was a little girl. Her parents thought she had something special and gave her training in singing and dance.

“I loved it,” she said. “It has always been a way to make me feel in close contact with myself. Singing is as easy as speaking for me. It comes like second nature, and nothing feels as freeing.”

Kira also feels a connection to her audience. Audience connection is critical: “I want to be a strong role model for girls to feel confident in themselves and rock what they have been given. In general, I try to make people feel good about themselves in their bodies and their minds. I want to be a positive outlet for people instead of a sad one.”

Talking about her career, hopes and dreams, the conversation turns to Kira’s love of using her “instrument” — her voice.

As she describes the joy she experiences when she’s singing, the words spill out: “It’s like freedom. It’s exhilarating. My lungs are burning like in a workout. Singing is something that I need as much as breathing. It feels essential to constantly exercise my instrument. I love singing in the studio, going out and performing in front of people, and even just singing alone as I discover more about my voice and its capabilities.”
