International pop star Yulee brings her first album to the United States along with a live performance in Los Angeles. Featured on her debut album of the same name, “Paracetamol,” invites listeners to commiserate on the search for solace through pain and suffering.
Performing at the Fonda Theater in Los Angeles on July 20, Yulee showered eager fans with an enthusiastic, 5-song performance along with a supporting cast from Korea. She was joined onstage by drums, bass, guitar, background vocalists, and backup dancers.
Hailing from the Busan province of South Korea, Yulee has long dreamt of visiting and performing in the U.S. Since she began studying music and songwriting, Yulee has come a long way in her craft. Her curated sound transcends K-pop to offer listeners a richer, deeper sound.
Yulee skillfully incorporates ballad, rock, and pop rock elements into her signature style. She turns to real-life experiences and stories from her own life that resonate with listeners. Yulee takes pride in her discipline, determination, and mindfulness—particularly in how she adapts her best qualities to mastering her craft. She hopes to remind her listeners, “do not easily give up on something you think you can do.”
Driven by a strong belief in the power of music, Yulee—otherwise known as Yuli Choi—became the CEO of SRP ENTERTAINMENT, the label under which she is also an artist. She works alongside producer Kyong Mun Lim of Korea and regularly seeks encouragement from her Thai teachers. “My style comes from inspiration in writing poetry, the environment, and experiences,” shares Yulee. “But one thing that remains the same is that my Thai teacher taught me that we should try to compose songs that are socially responsible whenever we have the opportunity.”
“Paracetamol,” the key single off her latest album, is an example of her socially conscious work. By sharing her pain, Yulee connects with those fighting similar battles. “Paracetamol” is a cry for help from pain and suffering. “I want to escape from the pain and suffering,” explains Yulee. In the song, she asks “Can anyone help me? Can Paracetamol treat emotional pain and suffering?”
Her latest album, also named Paracetemol, features another four songs that showcase Yulee’s strengths as a writer, musician, and singer. “Atmosphere in the Heart” reflects on the idyllic love between two people, which the narrator observes must be mutual. “Suddenly” is a reflective piece about losing someone or something and diving into an emotional struggle of never knowing when our last day will be. “20 Years and Up” highlights the ups and downs of love over the years—long after you’ve parted ways; it explores letting go of blame and acknowledging the roles both sides played in a deep love that ended too briefly. Lastly, “After the Rain” delves into overcoming obstacles and seeing the brighter side, much like the sun comes up again after a storm.
