Queens rapper and sharp lyricist Homeboy Sandman is gearing up for another EP rollout. He’s been one of the most consistent artists this year, already dropping three EPs along with the album Soli Deo Gloria. Each of these projects has been built around collaborations with producers, so it makes sense that he’s linking up with another one now.
This Friday, October 3, Sandman is set to release Tears of Joy. The project will include six tracks, all fully produced by GUIDANCE. The complete tracklist can be found below.
In a press statement, Sandman opened up about the tone of the release. “Tears of joy in the conventional sense is like being so happy you cry. That’s not really what this is. This is like crying but still feeling joyful. The EP is kinda melancholy and feels more downbeat than a lot of what I put out. Still joyful though.”
Sandman has often talked about his preference for working with different producers as a way to expand his artistry. He explained that GUIDANCE provided a fresh challenge, one he embraced and looks forward to sharing with listeners.
“GUIDANCE has a real kind of ethereal celestial sound doesn’t he? Sounds like glass and crystal. I haven’t rapped over any production like his. 18 years making music always on the lookout for new sounds.”
The lead single, “Artist’s Creed,” carries a melancholic tone with its delicate piano progression and somber atmosphere. At the same time, it has a beauty to it that feels reminiscent of something Mac Miller might have chosen for Balloonerism.
True to form, Sandman uses the track to push listeners to reflect on deeper issues, addressing struggles like addiction. Check it out below.
