Westlife believe their incredible rise to fame deserves the big screen treatment.
The legendary boy band, currently celebrating 25 years together with their new compilation album 25 - The Ultimate Collection, shared that they would love to see their story turned into a full feature film rather than a documentary series.
Speaking with OfficialCharts.com about what could be next for the group, Nicky Byrne said a movie is high on their wish list.
“A movie! All these boy bands are doing the Netflix thing, but I'd prefer a movie. That'd be way cooler. It could be the full story...” he said.
Shane Filan agreed, saying the band’s beginnings have all the elements of a classic coming of age story.
“We could have young kids playing our roles. It's a proper, fairy tale story,” Shane added.
Kian Egan explained that the group’s origins alone make their journey feel almost unbelievable, especially considering where they came from.
“We have such a unique story we could tell,” he shared. “With me, Mark [Feehily] and Shane coming from a small town on the west coast of Ireland, the likelihood of it happening and becoming a success was just bonkers.”
He continued by pointing out how unusual it was for artists from smaller towns like Sligo to break into global stardom compared to those growing up in major cities.
“It'd happen more to the people that came from the city, like Nicky [Byrne] from Dublin who we met a few years later, than it did to us coming from Sligo.”
Kian also reflected on how often he still thinks about the early days of the band and the memories tied to his hometown.
“I think about our story, where we've come from and where we started,” he said. “I always drive around our local area, where I grew up, pretty much every second or third day. I always take a drive in and remember the things that happened as kids to make all this happen. Those are the moments the fans don't necessarily know.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Nicky revealed another dream still sitting on Westlife’s bucket list, collaborating with fellow pop icons Take That.
“We're always thinking ‘what have we not done?’” he explained. “Even looking at collaborations, we're thinking ‘what's next - can we do something with Take That?’ You can push the boat out and try anything.”
He also shared a piece of advice he once heard from Tom Cruise that continues to stay with him.
“Shane's mate Tom Cruise once said ‘don't be afraid to be afraid,’ and I think that's a great quote to live by.”
