When up-and-coming cartoonist Keef Knight has a traumatic run-in with the police, he begins to see the world in an entirely new way.

Taylor Swift joined Randy Newman for a special duet at the world premiere of Toy Story 5 in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening.

Ahead of a screening of the latest instalment in Pixar’s beloved franchise, the global superstar took to the stage and performed I Knew It, I Knew You from behind a piano.

Taylor wrote and produced the song alongside longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff, with the track inspired by the fan favourite character Jessie.

The singer later teamed up with franchise composer Randy Newman to perform You've Got a Friend in Me, the iconic song first introduced in the original Toy Story film in 1995.

The beloved track has remained a staple of every Toy Story soundtrack since the series began more than three decades ago.

Speaking to the audience, Taylor expressed her appreciation for the artists, animators and filmmakers who helped bring the movie to life.

"It means the world to me to be a small part of the universe of these films," she smiled. "Toy Story 5 is my favourite of all the Toy Stories. I'm so lucky I get to be a part of this. I want to thank all the creators at Disney and Pixar for all the work they put into this film. It's insanely beautiful. It's a masterpiece. We're so lucky to get have this film out. I hope you are all so proud of yourselves."

Several members of the film’s voice cast were also present for the premiere, including Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack.

During an interview with Variety, Tom admitted that Taylor’s contribution to the soundtrack had been kept secret from the cast until the very last moment.

"It was top secret. We did not know until, literally, when the moment came. They ushered us into a soundproof room and said, 'Tonight at 9 p.m., the true end titles song is going to drop, and it's by Taylor Swift.' And I was like, 'You guys kept this from us all?' And we saw the movie without (the song), we had some dummy thing in there."

Toy Story 5 is set to arrive in cinemas on June 19.
