During the concert, Djo, whose real name is Joe Keery, performed his 2025 song ‘Charlie’s Garden’. Released last spring, the original recording includes a spoken word appearance from his Stranger Things colleague Charlie Heaton.
Heaton’s original message begins with “Sorry to let you know last minute” and explains that they cannot meet that evening. For the live version, however, Djo surprised the audience by replacing the actor’s contribution with a voicemail from Charli XCX.
A phone could be heard ringing through the speakers before the large screens surrounding the stage showed Charli recording her message.
“Hey Djo, it’s Charli. I had no idea that you’d written a song about me,” she said. “That is like, so sweet of you. I’m honoured. Anyways, call me back after the show and we can talk about it. Bye!”
Keery, who portrayed Steve Harrington in the popular Netflix series, has previously discussed his admiration for Charli. During a 2024 interview with NME, he explained what makes her songwriting stand out to him.
“I feel like what she’s really good at is writing a song that is really about a specific thing,” he said. “A great example is this song from 2022’s ‘Crash’ called ‘Yuck’. It’s a great song about such a funny thing: her being over-stifled by a romantic partner, a boy who’s really obsessed with her. I feel like that’s such a cool concept for a song and she just nails it.”
“And I feel like she does that pretty consistently with a lot of her music,” he continued. “I also love the production of her songs. I just think she’s really cool and doing her own thing and not afraid to be herself. Which is kind of the whole point.”
The Djo cameo was not Charli’s only appearance at Outside Lands. She also headlined the festival, performing several songs from her recently released album ‘Music, Fashion, Film’ alongside popular tracks from ‘Brat’.
Charli also made an unexpected appearance during The Strokes’ performance, joining Julian Casablancas and the band for ‘Take It Or Leave It’.
Ahead of Outside Lands, Charli filmed an intimate performance at Maida Vale, played her first complete headline concert of the ‘Music, Fashion, Film’ era at Lollapalooza and joined Lorde for ‘Girl, So Confusing’ during the Chicago festival.
Later this month, she will make her headline debut at Reading & Leeds. A North American arena tour with Underscores will begin in September. Remaining tickets are available here.
Meanwhile, Charli has “begrudgingly” issued the ‘B-sides Edition’ of ‘Music, Fashion, Film’ through iTunes and released a companion film for the original record. She has also named her five favourite Charli XCX songs, including the “ultimate party song” and another track that leaves her feeling “very sentimental”.
