When up-and-coming cartoonist Keef Knight has a traumatic run-in with the police, he begins to see the world in an entirely new way.

Lady Gaga and Shakira are among the artists shortlisted for induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame this year.

On Thursday, officials revealed the nominees for the institution's next round of inductions. The organisation is "dedicated to recognising and celebrating the lives and legacies of the songwriters behind the world's most enduring songs".

Alongside the Born This Way singer and Hips Don't Lie hitmaker, the "performing songwriters" category for the class of 2027 also features Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell of America, Debbie Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie, Boy George, Vince Gill, Melvin Glover, better known as Grandmaster Melle Mel, Ne-Yo, P!NK, Sia, soul-rock band WAR, Jack White and ZZ Top.

The nominees in the "non-performing" category include Pete Bellotte, George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam of Boy Meets Girl, Kandi Burruss, Andreas Carlsson, Tom Douglas, Bob McDill, Maurice Starr, will.i.am, Dan Wilson and Toni Wine.

Several songwriting teams are also in the running, including Stargate's Mikkel Eriksen and Tor Hermansen, Stock Aitken Waterman's Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman, as well as Bob Feldman, Jerry Goldstein and Richard Gottehrer.

Songwriters become eligible for induction 20 years after the first significant commercial release of a song from their catalogue.

Eligible voting members have until 14 December to cast their ballots, with the successful nominees set to be revealed at the 2027 Induction & Awards Gala in New York City.
