Music is so deeply personal to Joesph Blue that he can still recall when his parents announced the death of Elvis Presley. “My sister and I were crying even though we were only five and six at the time,” tells Blue.
Though he never received formal musical training, Blue considers life itself to be his education. Influenced by everything from traditional Louisiana sounds and jazz musicians within his own family to the country of the 1990s, he developed an appreciation for songs that tell real stories. Today, while his daughter enjoys hip-hop, Blue embraces the idea that music continues to connect generations in different ways.
That commitment to authenticity became even more important after the loss of his wife of 19 years. In the aftermath of her passing, songwriting transformed from a passion into a necessity. “I’ve got a big library,” he adds. “I’m 53. That’s my whole life in there. In most country songs, you can tell where the chorus is going. But my songs tend to turn unexpectedly.”
