A calypso beat. A sing-along chorus with country vibes that is sure to put a smile on your face. And shameless double entendres. Say hello to “Pina In Your Colada (Recorded Live At The Shore Thang),” by Damion Seraglio Bond and Hannah Leyla. And say goodbye to your inhibitions.
The opening verse sets the scene:
Sun going down and the tiki lights glow.
Steel drums banging and the rum starts to flow,
Bare feet dancing where the warm waves roll,
Tiny little skirts got you losing control.
That hint of losing control comes true in the chorus, which drops all pretense of propriety: Damion stops beating around the bush and sings to Hannah: I wanna put my pina in your colada! Not to be outdone, Hannah challenges him back, Can you put your pina in my colada?
Their flirtation continues throughout the song, an infectious romp soaked with rum, coconut oil, ocean rides, and questionable pickup lines. The lyrics are over-the-top, and that’s kind of the point.
On the track, the full house at the “Shore Thang” shouts and sings along, as depicted in the raucous cover art: Damion with open Hawaiian shirt showing muscled abs, Hannah with cutoff jean shorts and a bikini top. They both sport cowboy hats, of course. The crowd parties hard on the beach.
But the question everyone wants to know is: who is this Hannah Leyla and Damion Seraglio Bond?
As it turns out, Hannah and Damion are the creation of Lloyd Eric Cotsen, a Los Angeles entrepreneur. After selling his largest business, he decided to pursue his artistic side.
“Songwriting has become a pretty unexpected second act,” he says.
Assisted by ChatGPT, Cotsen developed the personas of Hannah and Damion, then moved over to Suno to start creating the music. Some songs come quickly. Others need a lot of iteration.
“Pina In Your Colada” was in the latter category. The song’s humor depends on banter between Hannah and Damion, the way they pass lines back and forth in call-and-response fashion. That kind of interaction did not come easy for the AI.
Cotsen says, “Suno was spectacularly bad at obeying instructions about who was supposed to sing which line. I went through more than 160 versions.”
The new single joins a rapidly growing discography of songs for Hannah and Damion, with 80+ songs out already this year. These include titles like dance track “The House Of Heat” and the slow bluesy burn of “You Put The Boo In Malibu.”
Also rapidly growing is the duo’s fanbase. But Cotsen is not only interested in commercial success. His main reason for creating music is his own satisfaction and interest in pursuing songs with unconventional subjects, extended song lengths, and a wide variety of musical genres.
For Cotsen, the possibilities of AI are similar to other innovations in music technology. He says, “AI has functioned a little like the arrival of the synthesizer: suddenly I can hear ideas that previously existed only in my head.”
Future plans include translating his songs into the physical world with singers and musicians. In the meantime, he plans to keep creating. In other words: fans of Hannah and Damion can expect the good vibes to keep on coming.
